Folks have repeatedly asked me about it, so here’s another way to make curry wurst. Let’s call it the “brat booth way”, because one place (which you would nowadays call a food truck around here) sold them pretty much in this fashion in my home town. I told you – every spot has their own “original” recipe.
The main difference to what I posted for the M-Day BBQ is that this is made with kielbasa and ketchup for the main sauce ingredient – and closer to what I am used to in terms of German (pub) grub, even if we wouldn’t use kielbasa in a dish like this.
Do you like kielbasa? In what kind of a dish?

I love curry wurst so so much, so thanks for the recipe!! I never in a million years would have figured out those ingredients – cherry juice?! Awesome.

Hello, just found your blog and am loving your recipes! It has never even occurred to me to make currywurst because the ones round here are just so good that I tend to keep them as a treat. Also, I’ve never successfully made french fries how I like them when I buy them hot
I’m totally amazed to discover the currywurst sauce has cherry juice in – is that a standard ingredient or just one way of making it sweet?

Thanks for stopping by! If I were still in Germany, I probably wouldn’t have made this, either. But around here, you can’t get things like this, so I have to make them myself.
The recipe is a melange of a couple of recipes I found online, and one of them was using cherry juice. In addition to the ketchup, that gives it a hint of sweet, which is nicely balanced w/ the hot of the tabasco/Frank’s and the curry.
I do like kielbasa. I grew up with it being simply fried in a skillet and served with mustard for dipping.

The simple dishes are often the best ones.
I love curry wurst with curry ketchup. Here and then I have to have a “curry wurst mit pommes”. Once in a while I cook this dish for me and my kids. I don’t know what it is, but this dish is satisfying. It’s probably because of the different flavors such as sweetness, saltiness and savory just to mention a few. I guess you have to grow up with it in order to like it the way we Germans do. Thanks

I concur, this dish has a surprising depth to it. And as you can see in this thread, people get hooked on it when in Germany.
Sofie this sounds really good, but I am going to have to hide this post from my wife. She is polish and was raised on kielbasa. We can’t find good kielbasa in Durham, NC. I may have to find a mail order place to get it as she has been craving it lately. Do you make your own?

Hey, you’re in DURHAM! What do you mean you can’t find REAL kielbasa? LOL Sorry I “defaced” it w/ curry ketchup…
Seriously, these came from the local supermarket, but if I want the REAL thing, I get it at the West Side Market in Cleveland. The only problem there is that there are just a few people there who sell what I’d consider the “real thing”, just like w/ my German butcher.
My wife was stationed in Germany for a few years with the military. She has requested this next week. LOL!

For whatever the reason, this and Döner Kebap are one of those things people crave as a culinary memory from when they were “over there”. I think it may be b/c it’s so accessible. As always, if you do make it, I’d be dying to see pictures!
omg i am sooo excited you posted a recipe for this
it totally reminds me of doing my semester abroad in Berlin. I’m so making this soon!

Thanks! Yeah, and this is pretty much the way you’d eat it at a Wurstbude, too. The other version was WAAAAY to refined IMHO. LOL
